Brazil's Defense Minister Nelson Jobim announced on Friday that Rio's two state-owned international airports, Tom Jobim and Campinas Viracopos, are to be privatized in a bid to ease air traffic congestion.
"Both airports need renovations immediately to expand their traffic capacity to ease the air traffic congestion in Sao Paulo's Guarulhos and Congonhas airports, which are currently the busiest airports in South America," Jobim said.
The privatization process is to start next year, Jobim added.
He also said a new private airport is set to be built in Sao Paulo metro area.
Rio state's Governor Sergio Cabral Filho said the enlargement move will benefit Rio's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
