Eight of Brazil's 27 states contribute to about 80 percent of the country's GDP, according to a study released on Friday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The state of Sao Paulo produces 33.8 percent of Brazil's GDP, making it the country's largest GDP contributor. Rio de Janeiro, with 11.6 percent, occupies the second place. Minas Gerais follows Rio de Janeiro, producing 9 percent of the GDP, said the study, which analyzed data from 2002 to 2006.
All the three states are located in Brazil's southeastern region. The top eight GDP contributors also included the southern states of Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, the northeastern state of Bahia, as well as the Federal District, in the midwestern region, where the country's capital is located.
