Canada's Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will announce plans to slash almost 30 million Canadian dollars (24 million U.S. dollars) a year in public funding for federal parties, government officials said Wednesday.
Flaherty will make the announcement in his fiscal update Thursday, which is expected to contain measures to counter the current economic difficulty.
Salaries for parliament members and public servants are also expected to be frozen.
"The government intends to run the economy and run the budget in a responsible way," Flaherty told reporters.
The three opposition parties, who rely their overall revenue on the public funding, have vowed to fight against the cut.
The ruling Conservatives will not be affected much by the new policy as it gets most of its funding through private donations. Source:Xinhua
