Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Thursday at the 7th Presidential Summit of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) that economy would top the agenda of the meeting.
The summit was inaugurated on Thursday in Cumana, 408 km to Venezuelan capital Caracas. It is held one day before the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago.
Chavez said the ALBA agenda includes three main issues: the first was the world economic crisis and the implementation of the SUCRE (Single System of Regional Compensation); the second was the ALBA projects and the achievements through ALBA Bank; the third was the agenda of the Summit of the Americas.
The ALBA was created in 2004 with support of Venezuela and Cuba to counter the Free Trade Area of the Americas boosted by the United States.
Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo, and San Vincent and Grenadines' Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves were special guests to ALBA summit.
Meanwhile, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa canceled his attendance at last minute due to the electoral period in Ecuador. He may be reelected for another term.
