Visiting Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said on Monday that Argentina is a priority for Madrid's investments.

In a meeting with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez, Fernandez dela Vega agreed to reopen negotiations on economic integration between the Common Market of the South and the European Union (EU).

"Argentina has always been a priority country for the Spanish investments," Fernandez de la Vega said after the meeting.

The two leaders also discussed issues related to the Ibero American summit, to be held at the end of November in Estoril, Portugal. Next year's Ibero American summit will be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Madrid will seek a strengthening of ties between Mercosur and the EU in efforts to reopen negotiations between the two blocs, Fernandez de la Vega said.

Argentina will hold the rotating presidency of Mercosur in the first half of 2010, when Spain will hold the EU presidency.
