Telecoms giant Motorola on Friday won approval from the European Union (EU) to buy Japanese transceiver maker Vertex Standard.

"The transaction would not significantly impede effective competition," the European Commission, the EU's antitrust watchdog said in a statement.

Motorola is active in wireless and broadband communications technologies and embedded electronic products. Through its Enterprise Mobility Solutions business unit, Motorola is also active in two-way radios, or transceivers.

Vertex Standard is active in the design, manufacture and sale of two-way radios, one that can both transmit and receive.

The commission said though the merger would slightly increase Motorola's position in the market as regards certain type of transceivers, it does not raise competition concerns in the marketplace.

Motorola announced in November that it would acquire an 80 percent stake in Vertex Standard, a deal worth approximately 108 million U.S. dollars.
