Worries about the strength of the retail sector weighed down London's leading shares in early Monday trading, with the FTSE 100 index down 0.1 percent at 6,343.1 points.
Sainsbury's, one of the leading chain retailer which is this week due to reveal details of its Christmas sales, fell 6.6 per cent while High Street bell-weather Marks & Spencer fell 3.5 percent.
However gains by pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithkline, AstraZeneca helped offset losses.
