The eurozone seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate remained at 7.1 percent in February 2008, unchanged compared with January, but was lower than the 7.6 percent the same month one year ago, Eurostat, the European Union (EU)'s statistical bureau, announced Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for the 27-member EU was slightly down to 6.7 percent in February this year from 6.8 percent in January, and was remarkably lower than the 7.4 percent in February last year.
About 15.97 million men and women in the EU, of which 10.909 million are in the euro area, were unemployed in February 2008. Compared with January 2008, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 130,000 and 59,000 in the EU and eurozone respectively.
Among the EU member states, the lowest unemployment rate was registered in the Netherlands with 2.7 percent, and the highest in Slovakia with 9.9 percent.
Over the last 12 months, 22 EU members have recorded a drop in their unemployment rate, four have registered an increase and one remained stable.
The largest drop was observed in Poland, from 10.8 percent to 8.0 percent, and the highest increase was registered in Spain, from 8.1 percent to 9.0 percent. Source:Xinhua
