The European Commission proposed on Friday to maintain the suspension of import duties on cereals for another year amid rising prices.
The European Union (EU)'s executive arm said the proposal, which was put to a special committee for cereals today, was a reaction to the continuing tight situation on the cereals markets and the resulting high price levels.
At the same time, there would be no export refunds on cereal exports.
"In order to make it easier to maintain a flow of imports which will help maintain market balance, there is a need to ensure continuity in cereal imports policy by maintaining the temporary suspension of customs duties," the commission said.
Millet and buckwheat would be added to the list of products on which duties are suspended.
In order to promote supply to the EU market in cereals, the 27-nation bloc decided last December to temporarily suspend customs duties on imports of most cereals for the 2007/2008 marketing year until June 30, 2008.
