London market suffers worst weekly loss in six years

The London Stock Market closed lower on Friday as it ended a week's trading with what the insiders' called the worst weekly loss in over six years.

The benchmark FTSE 100 dropped 121.40 points, or 2.26 percent, to 5,240.70, making a weekly loss of 7 percent, which is the worst downturn since 2002.

Mining shares were among the major losers, with Antofagasta down 7.03 percent, Ferrexpo shedding 7.07 percent and Kazakhmys down 8.15 percent.

Banking shares including Barclays, HBOS and Royal Bank of Scotland also suffered.
