The European Commission said Wednesday it "stands ready" to support any idea to restore financial stability, including the call by French President Nicolas Sarkozy for a world summit on the market turmoil.
"Of course, and you will remember the Commission is a full G8 member, we stand ready to participate in and indeed provide support for any initiative that can further the stabilization of financial markets," Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen said at a daily news briefing.
Leaders from the European Union will discuss the idea when they meet for a summit on Oct. 15 and 16, Hansen said.
