Chocolate industry in France is doing brisk business amid escalating global financial turmoil, said a union official of the French chocolate industry on the eve of the 14th Paris Chocolate Salon.
"When the world is overshadowed by financial crisis, we are doing fine. As chocolate is a product that puts you at ease, our sales remain more or less the same since the crisis started," said the unidentified official.
He said the per-capita annual consumption of chocolate in France is about 7 kilograms, ranking the eighth in the world. While the past years have seen no dramatic change in terms of quantity, French people have become more choosy about the quality and flavor of chocolate, he added.
He noted that chocolate with a higher cocoa content has become more popular with consumers.
The 14th Paris Chocolate Salon, scheduled for Wednesday to Sunday, will draw the participation of over 400 chocolate manufacturers. The annual event customarily attracts more than 100,000 visitors.
