The London Stock Market soared eight percent at Wednesday's close, boosted on prospects of interest rate cuts.
Britain's benchmark FTSE 100 index ended up 316.16 points to 4,242.54.
Among the insurers, Old Mutual rose 30 percent, Admiral gained 25 percent and Aviva jumped 25 percent.
Heavyweight energy stocks surged thanks to higher crude prices lifted by improved sentiment on the world economy.
BP was up 9.6 percent while Royal Dutch Shell added 11.6 percent.
Banks also had sharp gains with Lloyds TSB, Standard Chartered, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, HSBC and HBOS gaining between 5.7 and 30 percent.
At the top of a limited list of losers was Friends Provident, down 7.7 percent.
Other losers included Liberty International, Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group, and Reckitt.
