Romania will become the first European Union country to introduce the electronic passports as of Jan. 30, Police quaestor Aurel-Vasile Sime, head of the General Department for Passports, said on Thursday.

According to the official, the new documents contain 50 safety elements compared to 32 as for the current passports. Among the new safety elements there is an embedded contact less chip in a poly-carbon page holding the signature data to ensure the integrity of the passport and the biometric data.

The electronic passport comes up with a series of novelties among which the most important is the introduction of an electronic data storage computer chip that includes all personal data existing in the e-file: given name, family name, personal numeric code, and document's term of validity, the issuing body, and citizenship. As well, this chip contains biometrics such as the facial recognition and two pair fingerprints recognition.

"We are to notify Brussels on Jan. 15 and, till the end of this month, a number of 200 information folders are to be sent to the Foreign Ministry, given that Romania has to notify 191 countries in connection with all the technical specifications of the new passport," said the quaestor.

"The first electronic passports will be handed over to the citizens on Jan. 30. The electronic passport is valid five years and for minors below six the validity is of three years," he added.
