Industrial production in the eurozone in February fell by 2.3 percent from January, the European Union (EU)'s statistics bureau Eurostat said on Thursday.
Production in the 16 EU nations that use the euro declined by 18.4 percent from the same period of 2008, the sharpest drop on record, reflecting a slowdown across all industrial sectors.
On a monthly basis, durable consumer goods fell by 4.3 percent, capital goods by 3.0 percent, intermediate goods by 2.4 percent, non-durable consumer goods by 1.4 percent and production of energy by 1.0 percent.
In the 27-nation EU, industrial production decreased by 1.9 percent month on month in February and by 17.5 percent year on year.
Among the member states for which data were available, industrial production fell in 16 and rose only in Portugal, Greece and Poland. The most significant fall was registered in Lithuania, which was 4.1 percent.
