Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday his country did not rule out the possibility of creating a supranational reserve currency in the future.
Medvedev described the idea of creating a supranational currency as "very productive" in excerpts of an interview with the U.S. television channel CNBC released by the Kremlin on Wednesday.
"The current situation itself suggests that there should be more reserve currencies," he said, "This will give options to react should any problem emerge in any economy."
"Some instruments already used by the International Monetary Fund, such as special drawing rights, represent in fact a prototype of such a supranational currency," he said.
Medvedev also said he hopes the ruble would become one of the regional reserve currencies, first of all in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
