Total on Monday announced the closure of its Dunkirk refinery in northern France, but promised to reassign workers of the closed facility.

The French oil company promised not to lay off the 370 workers at the refinery which has planned to wind down its refining operations by 2013.

But a group of Total workers on Monday stormed offices of the company in Paris to protest the closing of the factory.

"We are not surprised by these announcements," said one trade union spokesperson identified as Philippe Wullens.

Trade unions demand that the plant maintain its refining operations, while the management insists the plant shift to more profitable operations.

The Dunkirk plant also employs over 400 contractors.
