Venezuela's sporting press on Tuesday cheered the Argentine national soccer team's 4-2 win over Colombia, in the second day of Copa America Group C games held in Venezuela.
Local daily El Universal said that Argentina had won thanks to "waves of luminaries like Juan Roman Riquelme and Lionel Messi".
The game had "an exciting and stimulating first half, but became a melancholic yawn in the second," when the Argentine team, managed by Alfio Basile, decided to moderate the pace and keep hold of the ball.
Colombia had taken an early lead thanks to an Edixon Perea penalty, but Argentina fought back, with two Riquelme goals, to end the first half 3-1.
El Universal described Argentina's first goal, a penalty scoredby Hernan Crespo after a doubtful foul on Messi, as "a gift from heaven" just like Javier Zanetti's center kick, which "the beauty of Riquelme sent to the depths of the goal".
El Nacional headlined "Argentina made a little effort and got aquarter final place" saying that Argentina had experienced some stress during the first and last minutes of the match by Colombia that was fighting against elimination.
Colombia's Jaime Castrillon scored a 73rd minute goal, and Colombia seemed set for another until Diego Milito scored in extratime.
The newspaper quoted Basile as saying that Argentina played well and earned its win, while Colombia's manager, Jorge Luis Pinto, was strongly critical of the refereeing.
"We made individual and team errors, it is true. But there is also the fact that the referees are disrespectful of small South American teams," he said.
