While another tiebreak win saw Federer lead 2-1 overall, Nadal held his nerve and presented a strong comeback, racing to 4-0 up before finally taking the fourth set 6-2.

But the Spaniard then looked a shadow of his usual while Federer broke early to win the rubber 6-2 with an easy smash at the net, securing an eleventh grand slam title in his career.

The victory brought Federer''s head-to-head records with Nadal to 8 to 5 in favor of the Spaniard with Federer winning four of the last six meetings though.

Federer, 25, was appearing in a record ninth successive Grand Slam final, having broken his tie of eight with Jack Crawford of Australia at Roland Garros last month.

Nadal lifted all his three Grand Slam trophies in Roland Garros although the 21-year-old reached Wimbledon finals twice in a row.
