Zimbabwe's dream for an Africa Cup Top Nine quarter-final berth came to an end on Saturday when the Sables suffered a demoralising 29-30 defeat at the hands of eventual qualifiers Madagascar at Harare Sports Club. According to The Herald on Tuesday, this was the second defeat for the Sables in the South Pool A Top Nine competition after coming a-cropper against the South African Amateurs. There were a number of questionable decisions by the referee but this was clearly not out of ignorance as most of them went against the hosts. There is no doubt, however, that the Indian Ocean islanders played a better running game compared to the Zimbabweans.
Despite the defeat, coach Brandon Dawson believes there is still light at the end of the tunnel. "To be honest I was a bit disappointed over the result because we just let the game slip from our hands as we also made a few mistakes and Madagascar were quick to capitalise on those blunders," he said. "But the most disappointing thing is that the referee let go a forward pass in the last minute of the game by Madagascar and as a result we conceded a last-minute try that brought a defeat to our side. It is bad that the referee did not see it but everyone else did," said Dawson. "The defeat does not mean that we have not improved but while we are improving Madagascar and all the other teams are also improving and that is why we are still lining up a number of friendlies this year to improve the game," he said.
But putting all the blame only on the referee would be missing the wood doe the trees as the Sables were guilty of costly mistakes that denied them victory.
