Uganda may not be allowed to compete at the All Africa Games if an unpaid affiliation fee of 78, 000 U.S. dollars is not cleared. Local media reported Wednesday that the bulk of the Ugandan contingent is already assembled in Algiers for action, but it could all come in vain if the East African country does not clear outstanding debts with the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa. However, Ugandan sports ministry assistant commissioner Omara Apita has assured the athletes that the debt would be cleared.
"Everything is now okay. There is no cause for alarm," Apita was quoted by state-owned New Vision on Wednesday as saying.
Apita was with sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi for a Supreme Council for Sports in Africa ministers'' meeting in Algiers on Tuesday. Apita could not give details on how long Uganda had taken without paying its annual membership fees or if he was going to clear the entire debt. At the last games in Abuja in 2003, Ugandan boxers were almost barred from participating for failure to pay about 250 dollars in affiliation fees. They were only salvaged by boxing official Sande Musoke, who surrendered his allowances.
