Indonesia, co-host of the 2007 Asian Cup, has said it will provide more ticket booths in an attempt to avoid the mayhem that marred the opening match, local press said Thursday.
At the Indonesia-Bahrain match on Monday, disappointed fans broke through emergency exits while others were unable to get seats, even though some sections of the 88,000-seat stadium were empty.
The Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said besides providing more booths, the organizers would also open sales earlier on match days, reported English daily The Jakarta Post.
PSSI secretary general Nugraha Besoes, who is also the Indonesian organizers' chairman, said about 78,000 tickets would be on sale while the remaining 10,000 would be given away to VIPs.
He also promised to publicly announce the number of tickets sold to allow fans to "know how many tickets are still available for the match."
Indonesia will play Saudi Arabia on July 14 and South Korea four days later.
PSSI spokesman John Halmahera has accused the Asian Football Confederation of being late in distributing tickets to local organizers. The AFC said it was investigating but did not immediately comment.
