Vietnam''s efforts were rewarded in the 32nd minute when forward Phan Thanh Binh scored with a moderate shoot from close range. Qatar goalie Mohamed Ahmed did not catch the ball tightly only to watch it moving slowly into the net.
But it was Qatar who controlled the game in latter second half and striker Andres Quintana equalized the score in the 79th minute with a decisive header.
Vietnamese goalkeeper Duong Hong Son had to make several difficult saves afterwards.
In Group B, Japan will clash the United Arab Emirates at Vietnam''s My Dinh National Stadium on Friday.
