Canada wins first gold, United States tops medal table at Pan

Canada won the first gold medal of the 15th Pan American Games through its mountain biker while the United States finished on top of the medal table after the first competition day.

Catharine Pendrel of Canada crossed the finish line with a winning time of one hour 46 minutes and 6 seconds in the women's cross country event of mountain bike. She was followed by Mary McConneloug of the United States at 1:47:44. The bronze medal went to Laura Macouzet of Mexico at 1:51:15.

The United States turned out the biggest winner on Saturday as it won four out of 11 gold medals on offer.

The American swimmers dominated the open water swimming events through Fran Crippen in the men's 10km event and Chloe Sutton in the women's race.

The gold medals of men's foil individual and men's cross country mountain bike were also won by the Americans.

But the Americans also suffered a setback in the gymnastics men's team event.

The Puerto Rican team became the surprise winner of the event as it beat the powerful American team to the third place. Host Brazil took the silver medal.

Mexico placed second on medal table with two gold medals from weightlifting and taekwondo. Puerto Rico, Dominica Republic, Canada, Cuba and Colombia each won a gold medal.

Host Brazil won four silver and two bronze medals to place eighth on the medal table.
