Thiago Pereira won the men's 400-meter medley swimming event on Tuesday at the Pan American Games, breaking his own South American record.
Pereira finished in 4 minutes, 11.14 seconds, .77 better than the previous South American record.
American Robert Margalis came second in 4:17.52 and Canada's Keith Beavers was third in 4:19.01.
An hour later, Pereira came back to lead a Brazilian quartet to victory in the men's 4x200 meter freestyle relay with a games best time of 7:12.27. The Americans, without world record holder Michael Phelps, settled for the runner-up in 7:15.00, and Canada had bronzed in 7:17.73. Brazil's top swimmer, Pereira entered the Pan Ams with medal chances in eight events. He is ranked fourth in the world in the 200-meter medley.
In the women's 400-meter medley, Kathleen Hersey won the United States' 15th gold medal in 4:44.08, defeating countrywoman Teresa Crippen (4:46.18) and Argentina's Georgina Bardach (4:47.46).
Another American _ Jessica Rodriquez _ won the women's 400-meter freestyle final, finishing first in 4:12.22. Mexican Patricia Midori Castaneda Miyamoto grabbed the silver in 4:13.34, and Rodriquez's compatriot Corinne Showalter took bronze in 4:13.72.
