Young Kenyan runner Willy Komen defeated his Olympic-champion teammate Ezekiel Kemboi in the men's 3,000 meters steeplechase on Wednesday afternoon and snatched Kenya's first gold in athletics at the All Africa Games.
Komen, born in December of 1987, came onto the top with a time of eight minutes and 15.11 seconds, 1.82 seconds ahead of Kemboi.
Ethiopia's Nahom Mesfin took the bronze medal with a time of eight minutes and 17.21 seconds.
Kemboi, born in 1982, won the gold medal in the men's 3,000 meters steeplechase at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with a time of eight minutes and 5.81 seconds.
Kenya has been dominating in the men's 3,000 meters steeplechase in Africa.
Since the first All-Africa Games began in 1965, Kenya has won gold in all the eight editions of the races, and the latest was in Nigeria in 2003 when Kemboi won with a new Games' record time of eight minutes and 12.27 seconds.
