American rider Christopher Hickey won the first equestrian gold at the 15th Pan American Games when he totalled 70.725 points for the individual dressage on Wednesday.

The silver medal was taken by Lauren Sammis and the bronze went to Yvonne Losos de Muniz of Dominican Republic.

"I'm very happy to be here. The competition was very tight. We had trouble bringing the horses and setting up the structure," said Hickey.

"I have had the chance to compete in the American Championship twice, but these Pan American Games are much better."
