Egypt snatched the men's handball gold on Saturday afternoon with a 29-21 win over hosts Algeria under an almost hostile environment created by the Algerian fans at the ninth All Africa Games.
The final was a must-win for Egypt and Algeria, both being handball powers in Africa. The two nations were also locked in final-phase hunt for golds in the medal tally.
The Egyptian handball team, who didn't lose a single game coming into the final, managed to overcome the unfavorable situation, scored 13 goals in the first half, three more than Algeria.
In the second half, Egypt showed more efficient attack and extended their lead over Algeria to eight goals.
In the women's handball final in the day, Angola scored an easier 35-22 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo and won the gold medal.
