Canada replaced the United States as the biggest winner of Tuesday's athletics competitions by winning two out of five gold medals on offer at the Pan American Games.

The Canadians won the men's shot put and women's 800 meters events while the United States took the gold of the women's 100 meters.

Dylan Armstrong ensured his gold medal in the shot put with his second attempt of 20.10 meters. The silver medal was taken by Dorian Scott of Jamaica at 20.06, followed by carlos Veliz of Cuba in the third place at 19.75.

Diane Cummins was the winner of the women's 800 meters. She clocked 1 minute 59.75 seconds, beating Rosibel Garcia Mena of Colombia to the second place at 2:00.02. Zulia Calatayud of Cuba came home third at 2:00.34.

Panama also won a gold medal in the men's long jump through Irving Saladino, a favorite for the gold medal at August's world championship in Japan.

Irving Saladino was measured at 8.28 meters. Wilfredo Martinez of Cuba was second in 7.92 and Bashir Ramzy of the United States finished third at 7.90. Ivan Pedroso of Cuba, a four-time world champion and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games gold medalist, finished a disappointing fourth at 7.86.

But Tuesday's hero was Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles who surprisingly won the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.15 seconds. It was the first gold medal for Netherlands Antilles at these Pan Am Games.
