Canada, Cuba and Mexico won the first gold medals in the canoe flatwater events of the Pan American Games on Friday.
Canada's Angus Mortimer won the men's individual K-1 1000m, crossing the finish line with a time of 3:39.519.
Brazilian Sebastian Cuatrin, who won silver at the last two Games, had to settle for second place again, clocking 3:42:725. Cuban Jorge Garcia completed the podium in 3:44.341.
Mortimer admitted that he had resort to the Internet to win at Rio 2007.
"I made a research on the lanes conditions. It was very windy during the rowing competition, but on Friday 27, the weather was fine and they were good. It helped the good performance of the athletes," he said.
In the men's individual (C-1) 1000m canoe race, Jose Cristobal Quirino of Mexico was the gold medalist with a time of 4:01.53. Reydel Ramos of Cuba won the silver medal in 4:06.102, and Canadian Benjamin Russell had bronze in 4:09.598.

Brazil's four-man boat of Roberto Maheler, Carols Campos, Sebastian Cuattrin and Edson Isaias da Silva claimed the gold medal in the men's K-4 1000m race in 3:04.145.
Karel Aguilar and Serguey Torres of Cuba took first place in the men's C-2 1000m with a time of 3:47.85.
The Cubans also won gold in the extremely well balanced K4 500m for women, completing the course in 1:40.702. The silver went to the Venezuela and Canada snatched bronze.
