South Korean soccer coach Pim Verbeek has offered to resign, the Korea Football Association (KFA) said on Sunday.
Verbeek, 52, offered to resign to the KFA before Saturday's match with Japan and the KFA has accepted it, said KFA spokesman Lee Won-jae.
The KFA will discuss the successor of Verbeek after the national squad returns to South Korea on Monday, said Lee.
South Korea beat Japan with a 6-5 penalty shootout on Saturday and only got the third place at the Asian Cup. Verbeek had vowed earlier to win the champions of the tournament.
The Dutchman was named as South Korea's national coach in June 2006 to take over Dick Advocaat's position. His contract with KFA expires until late August 2008.
Verbeek has served as an assistant to Advocaat in South Korea's national team from September 2005 to June 2006 and was also an assistant coach to former South Korean national coach Guus Hiddink during the 2002 World Cup. He is the seventh foreign coach for South Korea.
