Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Monday congratulated Iraq on the national football team's victory at the Asian Cup.

Howard said Iraqis could take a lesson in unity from the successful national football team.

Howard's comment came after Iraq's 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the 14th Asian Cup final in Jakarta, Indonesia, showing a rare harmonious scene amid daily violence.

Howard said the win had provided a welcome respite from the terrible time the country was going through.

"It's a pointer to the rest of the country that together they can achieve so much," he told reporters in Sydney, Australia's largest city, Monday.

"I hope the lesson demonstrated by their soccer team on the playing field is fully absorbed and replicated inside the country itself," he said.
