The "Law Enforcement Torch Run" for Shanghai Special Olympic World Summer Games is going to land in Beijing on September 26, the organizing committee for Shanghai Special Olympics announced on Wednesday.
The organizing committee also disclosed the torch run course for both international and domestic activities. The torch was lit in Athens, Greece at a ceremony to start the the torch run on June 29th. The torch will then be carried to five continents including cities of London, Cairo, Washington, Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney before reaching China.
Wherever it arrives, the torch will be greeted by a welcome ceremony attended by political dignitaries, sponsors and local citizens.
The flame will arrive in China on September 26th. To welcome and pass on the torch, a grand ceremony will be held in Beijing, which will be attended by not only officials from the central government, but also sponsors, host town representatives and people from all walks of life. By then, law enforcement officials from home and abroad and special Olympics athletes, joined by Beijing citizens, will carry the flame across the city, kicking off the China leg of torch run.
At the Beijing ceremony, the flame will be passed to representatives of law enforcement officials from host towns including Beijing, Harbin, Dalian, Xi'an, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Wenzhou in mainland China along with Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, who will then bring the flame back to their respective host towns and invite local enforcement officials to participate in the torch run.
After it pooled into Shanghai, the host city of the Games, on September 29th, the flame will be passed through 19 districts and counties along four routes within the city. On the evening of October 2, the flame, escorted by law enforcement officials, will arrive at the opening ceremony and be passed to a famous Special Olympics athlete to light the Special Olympics Cauldron.
The "flame of hope" from Mount Olympus will be lit in China for the first time, brightening up the brightness, friendship and hope for the intellectual disabled all around the world.
The "Law Enforcement Torch Run" is the most influential part of the the Games. The torch run for special Olympics was launched in 1981, conceived by police chief Richard Lemony of the US Kansas state. The plan to have law enforcement agents participate in the torch run will raise public awareness and funds in the protection of the disadvantaged by strong arms.
More and more police participated in it. The program of combining "iron fist "and "tender heart" is incredibly successful. It soon developed into an important event of the Special Olympics.
In 1987, the first Law enforcement torch run was held in Canada and Jamaica simultaneously. The event has covered over 100 countries in the world, and is one of the most watched tradition of all the world Games.
The Shanghai Special Olympics torch run is expected to be the largest in scale, in the number of participants and longest in distance so far. The slogan is to "pass on love and share into sunshine".
