Kenya''s athletics officials said Wednesday they have launched investigations to establish the whereabouts of two junior athletes believed to have defected to Gulf States.
Athletics Kenya (AK) Public Relations Officer Peter Angwenyi said the association is also making inquiries into the homes of Levi Matebo and Titus Masai to ascertain why they are missing in the camp.
"We have only replaced the two from the Kenyan team destined for Burkina Faso. We can''t say right now that they have defected until we have confirmed the facts," Angwenyi told Xinhua by telephone on Wednesday.
The two athletes were part of Kenya''s team to the African junior championships in Burkina Faso next week. Masai was selected in the 10,000m while Matebo was in the 5,000m.
He said the team for the continental showcase to be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from August 9 departs from Nairobi on August 6.
