Steffen Becker, coach of men's quadruple sculls from Germany, said Tuesday that his country is likely to win nearly half of the 13 gold medals at the forthcoming World Rowing Junior Championships.
"We are one of the strongest teams, and I estimate we can win five to six gold medals at the junior championships," Becker told Xinhua.
He said that a total of 55 Germany rowers will take part in all the 13 events at the 2007 World Rowing Junior Championships that will kick off in Shunyi Olympics Rowing-Canoeing Park on Wednesday, one year from the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games.
"After watching the training, I find the German rowing team is very strong, both phisically and techniquelly," said Yang Yong, coach of China's men's coxed eight.
Becker was greatly impressed by Chinese rowers as well as the newly-built Olympics Rowing-Canoeing Park in Shunyi in northeastern outskirt of Beijing.
"I never thought the young Chinese rowers are that tall and have so good techniques. But I will wait and see what results they will achieve," said the Germany coach.
Becker said, "the faciliies in the huge water park are first class." The four-day World Rowing Junior Championships, served as test event to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, will host more than 600 rowers from 50 countries and regions.
