China is ready to give shots on more events for gold medals besides its traditional stronghold at the upcoming World University Games here, top officials revealed on Tuesday.
"We may have some breakthrough on some unexpected events, but our goal is still on the 21 gold medals we won in Izmir two years ago," said Guo Xiangyuan, head of the Chinese delegation group on Tuesday.
Table-tennis, diving, badminton, shooting and gymnastic events don't have many top-level Chinese athletes in the world as most of them are on a tight schedule for the preparation of next-year's Beijing Olympic Games.
While women's soccer, women's volleyball, taekwondo and some track-and-field events may have some break-through in the Bangkok Universiade, which is slated from Aug. 8-18.
Diving is the only dominating event for China, who collected 10 out of 12 gold medals in the last version of the competition in Izmir, Turkey, with elite members of Hu Jia, Peng Bo and Lao Lishi in the squad.
China swept the trophies in the recent table tennis world championships and the badminton world-level competitions, but most of its first-team players don't join the Universiade delegation.
In gymnastic and shooting competitions, China only eyes on countable gold medals with less competitive athletes compared to strong opponents from Europe and Asia.
However, the runners-up women's soccer and volleyball teams are aiming nothing but the championships here.
The women's soccer team kept its bone players and added new blood for a better results two years later, while the volleyball team are confident to win the trophy when defending champion Chinese Taipei pulled out almost its whole squad before coming to Bangkok.
A squad composed of stars like Xu Yanwei and Pang Jiaying vowed to surpass the results of two golds from last swimming competition.
"The Universiade is an important competitions before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but it's also a place to show the development of college sports to the world. We need not to bring all the first teams here just for some gold medals. We'll be content if we collect 21 gold medals here again as we did two years ago," said Wang Gang, general secretary of the Chinese delegation.
China sent a group of 445 athletes to the Universiade, which will have the competition on wing on Thursday.
Besides its traditional strong fields, China is ready to clinch titles from relatively weak points at the upcoming World University Games here, Guo Xiangyuan, head of the Chinese Universiade delegation, said on Tuesday.
"We may have some breakthrough on some unexpected events, but our goal is still to take 21 gold medals we won in Izmir, Turkey, two years ago," Guo said at the Bangkok international airport.
China did not field its big names in table tennis, badminton, shooting and gymnastic events as most of them are on a tight schedule for the preparation of next-year's Beijing Olympic Games.
