Jiang Qiuyan, a quite village girl walking on track for 12 years, gifted China the first Universiade gold in Bangkok on Thursday, and her dream was to have a chance to present another golden gift to her motherland at the Beijing Olympics.
Jiang, 24, easily defended her title in the women''s 20km walk in the rainy morning, clocking one hour 35 minutes and 22 seconds and leaving her opponents far behind.
She had been crowned at the last Universiade in Izmir, Turkey, in a Universiade best of 1:33:13. But her personal best stands at 1:27.00.
"I am very excited now," said the Universiade best holder, "I am satisfied with the result, though it is not as good as the record I set two years ago."
Two Universiade titles are far from enough to Jiang, who is determined to exert her utmost strength in the following year, for her ultimate Olympic dream.
"From now on, I will try my best to attend the Beijing Olympics, " said the student from Tianjin Normal University, who just claimed the Asian Championships title in Jordan last month.
