Despite her excellent performances at two Universiades as well as the Asian Athletics Championships, Jiang is still out of the top three female walkers in the Chinese athletics squad.
"She is good, but simply not one of the top three yet," said Shen Chunde, a member of Technical Committee in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
In accordance with the IAAF regulations, only the top three walkers of each country, who have achieved the International A- class standard, will be qualified for the Olympics.
"Her personal best at present ranks fifth in all women walkers of China, which means she has a chance to compete, but much more effort is absolutely needed," Shen said.
Born in Shaanxi Province of China, Jiang started her training as a walker at the age of 12. Her outstanding stamina and fortitude convinced the coaches that the skinny village girl would be a future star.
"Ordinary people cannot imagine how hard the long-distance walk could be," said Zhang Xianglu, Jiang''s first coach in Shaanxi.
