Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the fifth edition of Nairobi international marathon which will be held in October this year, organizers said here Thursday.

The marathon has grown over the years from strength to strength to be the top sporting event in the country.

Numbers have been growing year on year and this year, the organizers are expecting the number of participants to exceed last year's mark of 16,000.

Last year, debutante Kiprop Rotich, a forest guard in the Aberdare Forest clocked 2:10:12 to set a new course record. The women's event was won by 25-year old Irene Jerotich who was also running a competitive marathon for the first time.
