Thailand stunned the world by grabbing the men's 4x100m relay gold medal in 39.15 seconds here on Thursday night, which was the first title claimed by the host of the 24th Universiade.
South Africa got the silver in 39.20 while China finished third in 39.30.
"This is the best-ever result for Chinese men's 4x100m relay at Universiade, a breakthrough for us," said Wu Yuejian, leader of Chinese athletics team.
"Frankly speaking, I am a bit surprised at their unexpectedly good performance tonight," Wu added, "All of the four sprinters are university students, rather than professional athletes."
Like the "Flying Spectacles Man" Hu Kai, who shone at the last Summer Universiade in Turkey, these four sprinters are also studying and training in China's prestigious Tsinghua University.
Earlier in women's 4x100m relay final, Finland won the gold medal in 43.48, followed by Thailand in 43.92 seconds and Ukraine in 43.99.
The Chinese women's runners finished seventh in 45.77.
