Russia produced world-class performance in the shooting event and shone in track and field to take four gold medals on the second day of the World University Games on Friday, topping the medal tally with six golds.
The United States showed their prowess in the swimming pool by pulling off three titles but China failed to reap any gold on the day with 21 golds on offer.
The opening day of the inaugural shooting competition in the Universiade history saw world-level competition from both men's and women's events.
Russian Olympics medal hope Leonid Ekimov claimed the men's 50m pistol after he collected a personal best of 571 in qualification, a result that would secure him a top three spot in an International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup meet. Russian also took the event's team title earlier.
The women's 10m air pistol kept the competition at a high level. Indian Art-majored Sarao Harveen won the title while all finalists ' qualification scores were higher than 384 points out of 40 shots. Ukraine took the women's team title before they had their second gold of the day in men's 110m hurdles by Sergii Demidiuk.
Chad Latourette brought the United States' first gold of the day in the men's 800m freestyle before Kaitlin Sandeno took the second in the women's 200m individual medley. The U.S. men's team made it three in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Japan had women's 50m backstroke title in pocket through Aya Terakawa before her fellow countrymen finished on top of the podium in men's gymnastics team event by a large margin of 8.5 points ahead of second-placed China.
Germany's world record holder Britta Steffen won the women's 100m freestyle by 54.36 seconds, 1.06 seconds slower than her own world record created in the European Championships in August last year.
Back to track and field, Belarus pulled off two titles in two women's events, the 100m hurdles and hammer throw. Lithuania nipped the women's heptathlon gold medal.
Host Thailand, Iran and Chinese Taipei split three gold medals in taekwondo while Canadian Mackenzie Downing snatched women's 100m butterfly and Kazakhstan won the women's long jump.
