Chinese taekwondo players finished the third day's Universiade competitions without a medal again on Saturday as the last player was ousted in a controversial sudden death.
Wu Na, who competed in women's 63kg category, forced her opponent Joyce Van Baaren of Netherlands into a 0-0 tie after three regular rounds in the quarterfinal.
She knocked Baaren on her head in the "sudden death" round, however, it wasn't counted by referees, who then gave one point to Baaren for her kick back.
Liu Zhanlu, coach with the Chinese taekwondo team, said it's obvious that the referees made it wrong. However, after discussion, the delegation decided not to appeal.
"It's probably they will maintain the original judgment," Liu said, adding bad calls are common in taekwondo competitions as it's difficult for the four referees to cover all the directions.
He said Wu should have at least won a bronze medal today if there were no mistakes by the referees.
The other two Chinese players Liu Jing and Zhang Lingjiang were both eliminated in their first rounds in women's 59kg category and men's 67kg division respectively.
The Chinese taekwondo team is still empty-handed at the Universiade. Liu Zhanlu said Fengfei, who will take part in tomorrow's women's 55kg division, is probably to win the first medal for the team.
