Uganda has won its first medal at the ongoing World University Games in Thailand after distance runner Simon Ayeko snatched bronze in the men's 5,000m final on Sunday.
The Kampala International University student clocked 14 minutes 10.93 seconds to finish third behind Hallil Akkas of Turkey and Japan's Yuki Matsuaka at the Thammasat University ground in Bangkok.
Ayeko's next target is the 3,000m steeplechase final, after posting the third best time in the semi-final on Saturday. He will also be running the 10,000m.
Uganda was represented in swimming, table tennis and badminton in the games that end Saturday. However, Uganda's medal campaign started on a false note as many failed to go past the first round.
Badminton was the worst hit with all the participants, who included national players Wilson Tukire, Ivan Karimunda and Rose Nakalya, falling in straight sets in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Uganda won three gold medals in the 2005 edition in Turkey.
