The United States won another two gold medals on Tuesday to wrap up the swimming competition with 10 gold, eight silver and eight bronze at the top of the medal table in the Bangkok University Games.

Most of the strong contenders brought their top swimmers in Bangkok for an early preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The U.S. were content to finish with one less gold medal compared to the last version of the tournament in Izmir, Turkey.

Kelly Harrigan won the women's 200m backstroke by two minutes and 11.48 seconds ahead of Melissa Ingram of New Zealand and Takami Igarashi of Japan.

Japan's Aya Terakawa, who won the 50m and 100m backstroke gold medals, finished sixth.

Michael Klueh of the United States added the men's 1,500m freestyle victory in a time of 15.00.26 after winning the 800m event.

Japanese Nanaka Tamura pocketed the women's 100m breaststroke, timing 1:08.33, to keep Japan in the second place on the medal table with five gold, eight silver and two bronze.

"The (swimming competitions of) Bangkok University Games are in a very high level. I didn't expect it so competitive before I came here," Japanese coach Hiroaki Kaneko said. "I'm quite satisfied with the Japanese team."

Germany trailed Japan on the third place after Britta Steffen sprinted towards her second triumph in the women's 50m freestyle, timing 24.87 seconds.

World-record holder Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine broke the Games record of men's 50m breaststroke in 27.63 seconds in the heats.

He swam 27.74 in the final, which was enough to conquer the gold.

Russia collected its third gold medal in the competition after defeating the U.S. in the men's 4x100m medley relay in 3:36.17.

Ukraine finished third.

In Tuesday's other events, Canadians Audrey Lacroix and MacKenzie Downing had a 1-2 finishing in the men's 200m butterfly with Lacroix producing the best time of 2:06.83.

While Nicholas Santos won Brazil the only gold in the pool with the victory in men's 50m freestyle in 22.12.

China failed to win in any match, finishing in the 13th placing with three silver and three bronze.
