Carson and Jomphe beat Cao Na and Zhao Xiaolin from China, scoring a total of 50 points, only three more than that of the Chinese duet team. The complete scores are 21-16, 11-21, 15-13.

"They are great competitors. They were very tough and challenged us," said Carson.

"The Chinese players worked out our strategy in the first set and won the second. But we then changed our strategy and that helped clinch victory."

Zhang and Ma proved to be in a different league as they combined to destroy Renee Smith Cleary and Jennifer Lombardi of the United States 21-11, 21-15 in 34 minutes.

Title contenders Angela Vieira and Danielle da Conceicao Cunha Vivian from Brazil also entered the round of 16 after beating Cheng Mei Ling/Chan Shui Shum of Hong Kong, China, 21-10, 21-10.

Luk Teck Hua and Beh Shun Thing were the first pair in the day session to make the knockout round, beating Camilla Nilsson and Rivia Oliveira of Sweden 21-19, 17-21, 15-13.

After splitting the first two sets, the two duos fought hard in the deciding set, exchanging the lead several times until the Malaysian team used some lob play to go up 11-9. After that, they were never threatened.

"In fact, the two teams are on the same level. We did not play our best, although we won the game," Beh Shun Thing said.

"We have already qualified for the next round. We hope to reach the quarterfinals at least," the 22-year-old said.

There were also round of 16 tickets for Swiss Isabelle Eusabeth Klara Forrer/Sarah Schmocker and Mari-Liis Graumann/Natalja Bratuhhina of Estonia.
