Myanmar will take part in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) U-17 football championship to be held at the Olympic stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, starting this weekend, according to the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) Friday.

The ASEAN U-17 championship slated from August 19 to September 1, will feature 10 countries in the Southeast Asian region. The Myanmar U-17 is in Group A together with East Timor, Laos, Singapore and defending champions Vietnam, while Group B includes Brunei, host Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, the MFF said.

The Myanmar U-17 will play with Singapore as their opening match on Aug. 22, with Vietnam on Aug. 24, Laos on Aug. 26 and East Timor on Aug. 28, it said, adding that the 24-member Myanmar U-17 soccer team, comprising 18 players, will leave for Cambodia Friday.

Three qualified teams from the ASEAN -- Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos, and an invited team, the Bangladeshi U-17 team competed in the last ASEAN U-17 football championship in August 2006 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Although the Myanmar U-17 defeated the Bangladeshi U-17 in their last match, the Myanmar U-17 secured second place for goal differences with the Vietnam U-17, which became the champion.

With a glorious history in Asian soccer, Myanmar's national senior team had won five times ASEAN champions from 1965 to 1973 and claimed the Asian Games title in 1966 and 1970.

Myanmar's youth teams emerged as champions at the U-17 ASEAN Youth Football Championship in 2002, the U-18 ASEAN Youth Football Championship in 2003, the U-18 Youth Football Championship in 2004 and the U-17 ASEAN Football Championship in 2005.
