No prize will be awarded to Chinese athlete winners in the Bangkok University Games, Yang Liguo, executive head of the Chinese delegation, said on Friday.
"We are short-handed on the budget and China has no tradition to give prize to student athletes in Universiades," Yang told Xinhua.
The Chinese national athletes who win medals or have good results in the international tournaments could receive money prize or material awards from the General Administration of Sports of China.
The Chinese Universiade delegation was organized by the Ministry of Education of China, who is still working on the methods to award top student athletes.
"The state budget is one of the channels to award our athletes who have won the fame for the motherland. We're seeking for alternative ways to gain funds from the society," Yang added.
