Safety remains the top priority for any sport facility to be used for next year's Olympic Games in Beijing, a senior official of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) told Xinhua here Friday.
Chairman of ICF's Slalom Racing Committee Jean Michel Prono made the remarks in Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park after the first day competition of the "Good Luck Beijing" China Open Canoe/Kayak Racing.
Whether it is to be used for next year's Olympics or to be used for recreational purposes after the Olympic Games as it is designed, safety of the facility is always the most important thing, he said.
The facility is doing some fine-tuning as part of the efforts to improve the safety, he added.
The facility will be used for rowing, canoeing/kayaking slalom, open water swimming in 2008 Beijing Olympics. The China Open currently being held here serves as a test for the facility put into use this year.
On the promotion of canoeing/kayaking in China, he proposed more TV coverage of these events and wider participation of the general public.
Prono is among the top ICF officials who came to visit and review water sport facilities in China several times. He highly praised the water sport facility in Shunyi District of Beijing, saying that it is almost perfect.
On Aug. 8 when it marked the one-year countdown to the Beijing Olympic Games, the park saw the opening of the World Junior Rowing Championships, the first competition of a series of "Good Luck Beijing" events.
