The Council Meeting of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) passed a motion of no confidence in BWF President Dr Kang Young Joong on Saturday and urged Kang to hand the chair over to the Executive Deputy President Datuk Punch Gunalan.

The members of Council had detailed discussions about the issues surrounding the governance and focus of the organization. All Council members actively participated following the decision Dr Kang handed the chair over to Datuk Punch Gunalan.

At the recent BWF annual general meeting, a letter was produced which had caused considerable negative comment about processes associated with the relocation of the International Office. Council received formal statements from Datuk Punch Gunalan and Roger Johannsen, Chair of the relocation task force.

Johannsen said that the bidding process for the relocation of the BWF headquarters from Cheltenham to Kuala Lumpur was controlled by the then COO Andrew Ryan and were above board.

Council recognizes members need to be assured about the process and the issues surrounding the letter. It appointed a Committee to examine the merits of the issues and report with recommendations on future actions. The Committee will have access to external experts to assist in its considerations.

Council has been surprised at the comments of the Sports Minister of Malaysia. It noted that the fundamental principles of Olympic include that the organization, administration and management of sport mush be controlled by independent sports organizations. The BWF will always strive to work productively with each of the government of its members including Malaysia.

According to The Malay Mail, BWF deputy president Datuk Punch Gunalan has been advised by Malaysia's Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to quit the federation in the wake of an internal crisis that not only threatens to drag Malaysia's reputation through the mud but also throw the sport's future in doubt. Azalina was instructed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resolve the crisis. The crisis was triggered by the sacking of BWF general manager and COO P. Ganga Rao last month.

Council formed a steering committee to undertake a major review of the office structure, its functions and all matters related the running of an international office.

A number of administrative issues were covered including the production of the statute book which will be available within the next month.
