Heavy rain forced athletes to withdraw from the Rajamangala stadium field when the closing ceremony for the World University Games was going on here on Saturday.
The International University Sports Federation President George E. Killian was delivering his closing ceremony speech when the rain continued to fall heavily, forcing part of the athletes without umbrellas or raincoats to leave the field.
The Universiade organizers once said they were worried about a rain disruption of the opening ceremony. But the rain did not come at last.
Thailand is in the rain season now.
The Universiade, opening on Aug. 8, drew to the close as 9,006 athletes from 152 countries and regions competed in the 15-sport Games, dubbed as the small Olympics.
Next Universiade will go to Belgrade, Serbia in 2009.
